It depends on what you do whilst traveling and what you are traveling via.
I for one, really hate crowded or “bumpy” public transport.
On the other hand, I love half-full trains. Whenever I cam, I find a train route to work, even if it was 10–20 minutes longer, just to have 30 minutes of reading on a train.
Commutes are, for me, amazing times to read and to listen to music. Hard to explain why, I’ve been trying to replicate the same feeling at home with no success thus far.
They can also be amazing for exercise (biking & walking).
I’m currently in the process of moving to 100% remote work and I will miss my morning commute.
But, overall, I agree, commutes are part of work and an employees should take their commute into account when negotiating a new role. Though, I think that responsibility to make sure the commute is properly accounted for in work time, working conditions and compensation lies mainly with the employee. It’s hard for a company to have a “commute policy” since people commute at different time in different ways.
